The Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the legacy of one of the South’s greatest writers, is kicking off spooky season with its Second Annual Candlelight Reading of one of Flannery O’Connor’s scariest stories. Award-winning local actor Wesley Pridgen will perform a live reading in the parlor of Flannery O’Connor’s Childhood Home.
Flannery O’Connor’s writing is a wild Southern Gothic cocktail, mixing faith and foibles with a dash of peacock-flavored absurdity. Her stories are like watching a slow-motion collision between grace and human nature, narrated by a sassy grandma with dentures sharper than her wit. O’Connor populates her world with misfits and zealots, then unleashes plot twists that’d give a tornado whiplash. Just when you think you’ve got a handle on things, she’ll smack you with a divine revelation that feels like hugging a theological cactus – uncomfortable, but oddly transformative. It’s a literary joyride through the South where the mundane turns mystical, the grotesque becomes graceful, and you’ll never look at a Bible salesman the same way again. Buckle up, y’all – it’s going to be a bumpy, bizarre, and utterly unforgettable ride!
The reading will take place on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024 at 7 p.m.
