Where did one of America’s greatest writers teach a chicken to walk backwards?
Flannery O’Connor is one of the South’s most loved authors. The Southern gothic writer and deeply sardonic author, O’Connor, wrote the novels Wise Blood, The Violent Bear it Away, and the short stories collections A Good Man Is Hard to Find, and Everything That Rises must Converge. O’Connor was awarded the O. Henry Award as Best Short Story three times, and the National Book Award for The Complete Stories posthumously. The Historic Childhood Home of Flannery O’Connor in Savannah is a small house located on Lafayette Square. It was where she lived from 1925 to 1938. It’s not surprising that O’Connor was fascinated by Catholicism, as she could see St. John’s Cathedral from the square. Today, the home is a museum dedicated to O’Connor’s life. You can visit O’Connor’s bedroom and see her childhood possessions. Also, you can learn more about the Great Depression through one of the many literary events held there. On O’Connor’s birthday, local writers and artists organize a bizarre annual parade. O’Connor’s legacy goes beyond her literary accomplishments. O’Connor was passionate about raising chickens and later peacocks throughout her life. She kept many in her Savannah garden. One chicken was so extraordinary that Pathe News sent a team from New York in 1932 to report on it. O’Connor recalled this event later in her life with her usual sarcastic wit. O’Connor recalled, “When I was six years old, I had a chicken who walked backward and was in the Pathe News.” “I was there, too, with that chicken. It was the highest point in my life, even though I was only there to help the chicken. Everything since then has been an anticlimax.”
