Artie the Bee
With a vibrant population, celebrating bachelorettes, and extremely talented art students, the city’s status as a vibrant and creative city is well earned. With a plethora of personalities, there are lots to see and do in this Hostess City of the South. Begin at Leopold’s Ice Cream. It is located on Broughton. Leopold’s Ice Cream is recognized not only for its desserts but for its incredibly long line that runs from the front entrance down the street filled with visitors who want to know more about all the fuss is about.
What’s it got to do with relating to books and bees? In the case of an occasional visitor, grabbing an Ice cream at Leopold’s, you’d probably not be aware. You’d have no idea, that’s it’s a huge metal bee lurking just on the other side of town, gazing at the people waiting for standing in the line.
This is the well-known “book bee” of the Jen Library at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). SCAD was established in the year 1978 by a tiny group of students studying art who had a dream of the establishment of a world-class art school. After four decades, it’s fairly simple to say that they have succeeded in their dream. SCAD is now an internationally-recognized institution with remote campuses in Atlanta and Lacoste, France. The school boasts its 99.9% of its alumni are employed after five years of graduating.
SCAD Bee
It all goes back to the honey bee. The SCAD mascot is Artie the Bee which is a truly scary insect often feared by freshmen during open house days. However, the SCAD students and their school are awed by bees and the iconography that includes adorable honey-bearers is able to be seen throughout the campus. Not just, but not only to, a massive metallic insect that is looming over the entrance to Jen Library.
Only illuminated by a huge orange light disc this bee is an ominous appearance. It is waiting to pounce on a passerby, yet not visible because most people don’t even think twice about the hidden feature that is affixed to the ceiling of the library.
