Blessing of the Fleet
This year has seen an opportunity to return to many significant celebrations and events in the Coastal Empire. This weekend is the 54th Blessing of the Fleet in Darien, the event that organizers believe is a vital element of the Darien community.
Next week marks the Blessing of the Fleet in Darien – the area where shrimping vessels will be passing right under the bridge and will be blessed for the coming season of shrimping. The Blessing of the Fleet is three days of celebration in Darien which includes the parade, vendors, live music, and 5K. The organizers say it’s a significant payback to the area’s shrimpers. “We do consider the shrimpers the heart of McIntosh County… so we’re glad to celebrate them and honor them in this beloved tradition,” said Alexandra Smetana, with the Darien-McIntosh Chamber of Commerce. A tradition meant to start the shrimp season with a bang.
“They will approach the bridge here, and clergy and priests from the area will gather together to bless them and ask for God’s provision and protection for them as they embark on this year’s shrimping season.” This festival could attract 15,000 to 20,000 attendees this is great news for local businesses. “We’re anticipating the weekend. We’re currently in the middle of it and anticipate a full week,” said Jeff Luke of The Spartina Grill. Luke says that the festival next week will boost the local economy. He anticipates that the chairs will be full and plans to provide up to 1,000 people. “It means that there will be more revenue for the city and county. However, it could also mean that we will see new visitors to our region with their money, and possibly move to our area in the future,” said Luke.
Darien is a great place to be. Darien community is thrilled to have the return of the event.
“Coming out of the pandemic, we are walking into the full-fledged, no stops, nothing being withheld, welcoming everyone.”
