Discover Bluffton’s Heyward House: A Must-See Historic Site
If you’re looking for a unique and interesting place to visit in the Bluffton area, be sure to check out the Heyward House! This historic site is located at 80 Lady’s Island Drive and is open from Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm. It was built in 1825 by Colonel John E. Howard is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The house was constructed in 1841, in early Carolina Farmhouse style brought by planters from the West Indies. The north parlor, as well as the bedroom, were the first components of the home built in 1841 by John J. Cole and his slaves in the 1840s to serve as a summer residence for his spouse Carolina Corley and their children. In the year 1850, Cole had more than tripled the size of the home.
The last slavery cabin on Bluffton remains on the same property.
After the Civil War, Mr. Cole contracted tuberculosis during his military service and passed away. The Cole family were able to sell their properties in Bluffton and relocate to Texas in1874. Mrs. Kate Du Bois, the wife of the Postmaster appointed by the federal government who owned the property, transferred it in 1882 to Heyward and remained with the Heyward family until its acquisition in the year 1998, by the Bluffton Historical Preservation Society. It is now maintained and accessible to visitors as the town’s exclusive house museum. It is also named the official welcoming center for Bluffton.
