Broughton Street
Broughton Street in Georgia is the very first official shopping district. It is also an ever-present gauge of the tempo of development and regression in Savannah’s history.
While today it’s an enticing avenue of commerce and fashion, through the years, it hasn’t always been this way.
It was named after Governor Thomas Broughton of South Carolina in 1735. Since then, it has proved to be one of the longest-running shopping areas throughout the history of America. George Washington visited Broughton Street during his famous visit to Savannah in 1791. The 1820 fire created a smudge however, the shops were rebuilt and business returned. Civil War soldiers were hospitalized there and were able to find food and accommodation in that time of Union occupation.
Following World War II, major retailers opened new branches in tandem with the mom and pop stores that had been around for generations. The most significant thing that was to take place in Broughton Street was WW Law’s peaceful demonstration of the civil rights struggle. The demonstration lasted for 18 months before Savannah abolished its lunch counters that were segregated. The culture was transforming towards suburbanites, Broughton Street quieted.
Retailers shut down their stores and the historic lane fell into decay. Then, at the beginning of 1990, the man who was known as Forrest was seated on a bench at a bus stop with a box of chocolates and everyone was able to remember Savannah’s downtown. And Broughton Street has been restored, just as beautiful bustling, and busy as it has ever been.
