St. Patrick’s Day Celtic Cross Ceremony in Emmett Park.
“After mass on Sunday, the Irish families and the Irish societies gather outside the Saint John’s Basilica and then we march together to the old fort,” Tara Reese, President of the Savannah Irish Festival Committee and a member of the Board of Directors for the Daughters of Ireland explained. “This is sort of considered the ‘real’ St. Patrick’s Day parade because it resembled the original 1824 procession from the cathedral to the monument in Emmett Park.”
When you arrive it is time to celebrate. There is a ceremony called the Celtic Cross Ceremony that honors the Irish ancestral roots and the Irish people with a eulogy at the monument as well as an official blessing of the procession from the bishop.
“I think the Savannah Irish are very protective of their Irish history and the origins of the St. Patrick’s Day parade,” Reese revealed. “The Hibernian Society, established in 1812, was founded through Presbyterian Merchants as a charity for Irish Catholics. In 1813 participants of The Hibernian Society marched in procession to the Independent Presbyterian Church. The other took place as a private procession, held in 1818, by the local militia group called the Fencibles. The first official St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held in 1824 when an advertisement of the Hibernian Society was published in the local newspaper, The Georgian, inviting the Savannah residents Savannah to attend a sermon on the Roman Catholic Church on the feast of St. Patrick the following day. The notice also urged those who were members of the Society to show up on time for a 10 a.m. meeting to ensure that they can take care of the business that was in front of them prior to moving through the church in a procession. It is the very first recorded invitation to the public about how to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah,” she said in announcing research she conducted in collaboration with Georgia Southern.
“There is just so much rich history here that so many people don’t even know about,” she explained. “It’s that’s one of the wonderful things about this city… meeting similar people, sharing our history and experiences, and helping make this city even better.”
