Local Weather

Juneteenth events happening this week in and around Savannah

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States and is observed each year on June 19. Last year, Juneteenth was officially made a federal holiday by President Joe Biden – the first federal holiday established since Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday was approved in 1983.

Ongoing

• “Past Presence: Commemorating Juneteenth” is an exhibition at Sulfur Studios featuring artists from across the country whose work takes into consideration their own personal history – present or past – as it relates to the Black experience in the United States.
• Past Presence is a declaration of PRESENCE – of artists claiming space and demanding to be heard.

• “Turning Freedom Dreams into Reality: Black Activism in the Georgia Low Country” Jepson Center, 207 W. York St.
• Juneteenth Soiree
• A night of entertainment, libations, and commemoration at The Culturist Union’s Grand Opening

Events on Saturday, June 18

• Tybee Juneteenth Celebration: Black Art Festival on Tybee’s 16th Street Walter Parker Pier and Pavilion
• “Juneteenth Celebration Festival: Daffin Dog Park, 1301 E. Victory Dr.”
• The Daughters of Mary Magdalene and the City of Savannah presents the Cultural Juneteenth Music Festival on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Wells Park.
• Juneteenth Free Family Day at Telfair Museums: The Bryan County NAACP Young Adult Committee will host the 2nd annual Juneteenth: A Celebration of Culture event in Richmond Hill. The event will feature live entertainment, Gullah Geechee culture, an arts and crafts fair, and more. Admission is free and open to the public.

Events for Sunday, June 19

• Tybee Wade In and Juneteenth Celebration: Tybee Beach Pier, Tybrisa St., Tybee Island, Ga.
• The Tybee MLK Human Rights Organization will host an event where they will host a Wade In followed by an official Juneteenth celebration, featuring vendors, entertainment, guest speakers, live music, and performing artists
• Pooler Juneteenth Festival: Tanger Outlets Savannah
• Free and open to the public and includes a health fair and vendors

Around Town

Award

• The Grey’s executive chef and managing partner won the coveted James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef. Mashama Bailey has been a staple in the Savannah restaurant scene for years. She opened The Grey in 2014, in a formerly segregated and restored Greyhound bus terminal. (NY Times)

Music

• Natalie Goodman is playing weekly at Plant Riverside. “Any support I get means the world to me,” said Goodman. She entered a contest to write a song and sing it in front of a panel of industry executives. She won and has since released an EP and several singles co-written with her sister. Goodman will perform some of her original songs at her weekly Plant Riverside residency, but she will also perform some pop stuff. She will be in the Plant Riverside pavilion every Saturday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. until the end of the year, and then she will go into emergency medicine. (SavannahNow)

Walking Dead

• AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead” is looking for extras in the Hostess City. The open casting call is on Saturday, June 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Empowerment Center, 4704 Augusta Road, in Garden City. (WTOC)

Nature Trail

• The Savannah City Council approved a nearly $170,000 project to build an interpretive nature trail near the new Enmarket Arena in the city’s Canal District. The City of Savannah is building a park to hold stormwater and mitigate flooding in the Canal District. The park will include a trail, community engagement, and engineering services. Wetlands Preserve Park is part of a larger revitalization effort by the city that also calls for Canal Park and several smaller-scale “pocket parks”. (The Current)

Civic

• The City of Savannah now offers an expanded pool schedule. City of Savannah’s Recreation and Leisure Services department now offers expanded pool hours to include Sundays beginning June 19 through the end of summer. See schedule. (Savannahga.gov)
