Moon River Brewing Company haunted history
Savannah is known for being America’s most haunted place. This distinction was awarded by the American Institute of Paranormal Activity (AIPA) in 2003. Moon River Brewing Company is the most haunted space in Savannah. Moon River opened its restaurant and brewery in the former City Hotel in 1999. The City Hotel, Savannah’s first hotel, was built in 1821. It being an old building, many historically documented occurrences lend fuel to Moon River’s many ghost sightings. One of the most famous is the tale of the murderous feud between a gambler, and a doctor. James Stark, a local miscreant, had started a feud with Dr. Phillip Minis in 1832. Stark, who was drinking in the City Hotel bar, made some sexist remarks about Minis. The good doctor immediately shot him. Stark was not liked by anyone, so Dr. Minis was acquitted of murder and allowed to continue his practice of medicine. Moon River’s building also housed the U.S. Post Office’s first branch in Savannah. After General Sherman and his Union Army arrived, the City Hotel was closed permanently. The building was not used for anything else until Moon River’s renovation in the 1990s.
Paranormal activity at the brewery is extremely high after all this time. Moon River customers and staff have many stories to tell about ghosts, flying bottles, and shadow people. There is also a pushy ghost called “Toby” and a third floor that the renovators won’t finish. It was featured on Ghost Adventures by SciFi Channel and Ghost Hunters by The Travel Channel.
