Fort Pulaski is one of the most well-known and historic places in Savannah, but the ruins from one of Savannah’s most historic Forts – Old Fort Wayne, is still visible today. The east of Washington Square and Emmet Park, Fort Wayne was constructed in the middle of the year 1700, and later became known as Fort Halifax. Its location, which was strategic, in the eastern River Bluff had an open and a wooden fort that was built with a caponier on every corner. It was renamed a change a century later. The Fort was given its current name towards the end of the Revolutionary War after General “Mad Anthony” Wayne. You can still see a portion of the wall from the past on the southern end of East Bay Street, just beyond an intersection East Broad.
