The Presidential Dive Bar
Pinkie Master’s is Savannah’s most famous neighborhood dive bar. The Pabst Blue Ribbon sign, which hangs outside, is a bright beacon that attracts thirsty patrons like moths. This popular establishment has a little bit of political history behind one of its most well-known patrons. Pinkie Master’s was opened in 1953 by Luis Christopher Masterpolis (better known as Pinkie). Pinkie, a political thinker, was an early supporter of Jimmy Carter. As a result, Carter visited Pinkie Master’s bar several times while campaigning as a Georgia senator and governor. Popular legend has it that Carter announced his candidacy for the presidency from Pinkie’s bar. Although this story is unlikely to be true, Carter did stand at the bar on another occasion. After Carter became president, Pinkie died. In 1978, Carter visited Savannah and snuck out of the Desoto Hilton Hotel to meet his security guards, then stopped by Pinkie Master’s. Carter addressed the crowd at the bar, paying tribute to his friend Pinkie. A plaque was placed at the bar where Carter stood to commemorate this moment.
Pinkie Master’s had many owners over the years. When a former owner was evicted, he took his plaque with him. The plaque was eventually returned to its rightful place a year later. A ceremony was held at the place now known as The Original Pinkie Master’s on St. Patrick’s Day 2017 to reinstall the plaque. Jimmy Carter, the former President, even signed a letter of support saying that he will never forget the good times he had at your establishment. Pinkie was a key supporter of mine when I ran for Governor. When I returned to Savannah as President, Of the United States, I will never forget standing at the bar to thank you.”
