Savannah City Market
Today, shoppers at the Savannah City Market will discover a lively and bustling green lawn, supported on all sides by historical markets, restaurants, and boutiques. However, not too long ago it was an entirely different scene.
City Market also known as Ellis Square was originally established in 1733. It was one of Oglethorpe’s first four wards that were later referred to as Decker Square, in honor of Sir Matthew Decker, one of the first Georgia Trustees. Savannah notables John and Mary Musgrove, Noble Jones, and, more likely, a prominent doctor and a member of the founding Jewish community. Samuel Nunes lived in the Ward during the time of Oglethorpe. Through the ages, the square was used for a marketplace in one form or the other that including an occasional slave market to time.
It was renamed Ellis Square to honor Sir Henry Ellis, the second governor royal of Georgia.
The most fascinating part of City Market over the years was the melting pot that proved to be part of Savannah’s infrastructure. Goods were delivered to Savannah from cattle farms and plantations far and wide attracting the full scope of the township.
Society members from every sphere of existence and economic backgrounds can be seen in the as well as living Life together.
Savannah’s downtown Savannah became a secluded and neglected place in the 1950s, it was due to the city, with its suburban themes, trying out new methods of bringing people together to return to the town. The first City Market sat empty and was selected to be demolished in favor of an underground parking deck. The land was then reclaimed and was restored to its original beauty in 2010.
