Many people who think of jazz, think of New Orleans, but one of Savannah’s lesser-known secrets is the jazz scene. While Johnny Mercer brought Savannah big-time swing, Ben Tucker brought to jazz.
Tucker was born on the 30th of June, 1930. He lived and was raised in Brentwood, Tennessee, but Savannah was his home for the next 42 years. He was a vivacious person and had a cheerful laugh.
It was not unusual to meet Mr. Tucker carrying his upright bass, Bertha, his 240-year-old treasure to Bull Street to go play the next big performance. The jazz club he was in, Hard Hearted Hanna’s, was the place where he led his jazz group six nights every week.
He recorded and performed for over fifty years with musicians such as Benny Goodman, B.B. King, Shirley Horn, and Mel Torme. He taught music to Savannahians through his legendary jazz radio station WSOK with the distinction of being the top station in Savannah for 13 years and serving over 400,000 listeners.
Although he died following a car accident in 2013 the music he composed lives on within the heart of all who were blessed with his musical language. 🎵
