History of Savannah’s Squares
In 1733, when General James Oglethorpe first placed boots on the ground we call Savannah, he had an ambitious plan for the layout of the city out in a way that was sensible, simple to navigate, and also gave the people of this new city areas to go out and do things in public. This is why General Oglethorpe thought of the idea of spreading Savannah’s city Savannah across a grid that included Squares, which were open spaces that were designed for public use and spread across the grid. The Squares were initially used to practice drills and exercises in the military, however, these days they are a place with beauty and historical significance.
As locals, we find it soo relaxing to head to one of the Squares, listen to music being played and drift off into a much simpler time. When visiting Savannah, make sure you leave some time to explore the Squares of Savannah. There are 22 remaining today (there used to be 24).
As Savannah was being developed, it was constructed around the Squares. These Squares were the foundation of present-day Savannah.
All of our Squares provide an opportunity to relive Savannah’s past. Explore the historic homes and historical buildings. Look at the interiors of the houses that provide tours. It’s all part of the things that make Savannah wonderful and you owe it to yourself to visit.

Elbert as well as Liberty Squares have been sacrificed in order to advance the development of Savannah. They are both just a tiny portion of their original area. Ellis Square was at one time, paved, but it was restored and it is one of the well-known squares in Savannah.
