The music, ambiance, and food could set the mood, but, the most experienced hosts realize that it’s the guests who bring the spirit to any celebration. The South is often hailed as the world’s hostess city, as well as its most popular favorite, Savannah is home to many venues that offer the mood as well as “spirit.”
The extravagantly elegant Mansion at Forsyth Park, arguably one of Savannah’s best hotels, is full of romantic indulgences. It was completed in 2005. This magnificent hotel is a seamless extension of a more dated building, a real mansion, recognizable by its address: 700 Drayton. The Romanesque masterpiece, which is adorned with a tower and the gothic arched entranceway has been a prominent presence in Forsyth Park for over 12 decades. It was built in 1888 as an individual home to family members from the Lewis Kayton family, the mansion is now the hotel’s five-star restaurant and also a cooking school, where guests hone their cooking abilities. This is the great thing about it. The mansion at 700 Drayton was not always a place for those who live. The elegant parlors that boast lavish mahogany trim once housed the dead.
In 1953, the Lewis Kayton mansion became the residence for Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors which was one of Savannah’s most storied and most well-known undertaking companies. Over the next five decades, the red-brick and terra-cotta mansion functioned as Savannah’s top mortuary, holding funerals of famous Savannahians like Danny Hansford, the high-spirited victim of Savannah’s most famous crime, which was made famous in the novel by John Berendt, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
The elegantly appointed rooms that used to be watching rooms to the dead are now luxurious dining rooms where the best cuisine on the menu in Savannah serves. Don’t miss the cocktails in the upper level. A hip hotspot that has a Bohemian design with a rooftop patio. Casimir’s Lounge is famous for having some of the most delicious martinis you can find in the Coastal Empire. If you want to dust your nose, there’s an elegantly appointed bathroom across the hall – an old bathroom that served as an embalming room.
