Every state is famous for haunted sites, and haunted bridges are among the most sought-after. The bridges are often built to cross rivers where someone was killed long ago or scenes of horrific accidents – all regular elements of stories around campfires, intended to scare children. One bridge located in north Georgia which has plenty of haunted tales floating around can be found in The Stovall Mill Covered Bridge near a small town called Helen, Georgia.
The Stovall Mill Covered Bridge is the smallest covered bridge in Georgia. It was constructed in 1895 and has a single span 33 feet wide. It is located on Chickamauga Creek in White County, near State Route 255. The bridge is now part of White County Historical Society. It was originally an interconnection from Cleveland to Clayton Road. However, Cleveland Road was removed in the year 1959. The bridge goes by a range of names like the Helen Bridge, Sautee Bridge, Nacoochee Bridge, and Chickamauga Bridge. Stovall Mill Covered Bridge was featured in the film of 1951, “I’d Climb The Highest Mountain” featuring Rory Calhoun, William Lundigan along with Susan Haywood.
The bridge’s historic covered structure is believed to have been haunted. If you stand on the bridge in the dark, you’re likely to hear the cry of babies who are not seen and the sound of carriages pulled by horses. A local news station recently did a paranormal investigation of this so-called haunted bridge. This bridge is a tourist landmark that is open to the public. 👻
