A mansion’s last remaining grandeur has been diminished by time and neglect.
If the walls of the Noble Hardee Mansion could talk and speak, they’d need to speak out to be heard over the hordes of antiques jostling for attention inside their rooms.
It claims to be “the last unrestored grand mansion of Savannah.” This deteriorating southern jewel does not live up to its advertising: peeling paint falling plaster and gentle neglect. It is now an antique shop, it’s a destination for people who are fond of old things or enjoy shivering from decrepitude or any combination of the two.
It was built in 1860 with the same man that gave it the house’s name. The Noble Hardee Mansion looks down and out onto Monterey Square. It was completed in 1869 and has the distinction of having received visits from the genial and totally forgettable US President Chester A. Arthur. Apartments in various tenement styles and a portion of the nearby Armstrong Junior College in the 1940s, it was one of only a handful of structures that have been deemed “exceptional” by the Historic Savannah Foundation.
The current antique store is able to enter the cellar on the ground floor and move up. The agility of the store is an advantage while you walk around the narrow maze of stacked armoires and tables. Be careful not to knock over the hand-painted 18th-century writing desk. Its price tag reads “$45,000.”
Even if you’re not blessed with $45,000 of spare change, then Alex Raskin Antiques is worth a visit. It’s not as much a shop as a museum. It’s not an actual museum, but the unnoticed and dusty storage area of a museum even if the storage area was by “15 fireplaces and exquisite plaster details.”
What was the whispered intrigue sounded in this painted 18th-century French wallpaper? Who did this Victorian toy belong to and what were they growing into? What dream were you able to imagine in this threadbare and frayed quilt? How do these floors that are 150 years old support a forest’s worth (at the very least) of old chairs cabinets, bed frames?
