Built in 1734, the Pirate’s House was originally a garden house for Oglethorpe Trustees. An addition came about 20 years later when it became an inn and pub used by seafarers traveling to ports all over Europe; including pirates like Anne Bonny who would go on raids across Asia Pacific oceans centuries later! She was famous for declaring to her enemies, “If you had fought like a man, you needn’t be hanged like a dog.”
The Pirate’s House is a fascinating place. Not only does it have an underground tunnel that leads to the bluffs of Savannah, but there are also plenty more secrets lurking beneath its floors! Some believe these passages were used for bootlegging and smuggling alcohol during America’s Prohibition era. Pirates would get men drunk and carry them through dark, narrow tunnels and out to waiting ships. The next morning they’d wake up halfway across the world with no idea what happened or how it came about that these strangers took control of their lives forevermore- but all too aware there was nowhere to go and must work until finally coming ashore at some point after many days spent aboard ship.
The Trustees Garden House is the oldest building in Georgia and it still stands tall, despite being hit by lightning many years ago.
