THE DIGEST

Savannah's Role in America's Independence

Siege of Savannah
View of the siege works against the town at the Siege of Savannah

Savannah played a big role in the American Revolutionary War. It helped the fight for independence in many ways.

The Battle of Savannah took place on December 29, 1778, and Savannah became a crucial battleground during the American Revolutionary War. British forces, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Archibald Campbell, launched a surprise offensive against the American troops led by Major General Robert Howe, who defended the city. This battle marked the beginning of the British Southern Strategy, which aimed to regain control over the rebellious Southern colonies.

The British highly valued Savannah's bountiful commercial resources, making it a prized target in their military campaign. Capturing Savannah gave the British a strategic southern base, allowing them to exert power and influence across the region. The British seized control of Savannah in 1778. However, in 1779, American and French forces attempted to recapture the city during the Siege of Savannah. Although this effort proved unsuccessful, it showcased the continued resistance against British occupation.

The British occupied Savannah from December 29, 1778, to July 11, 1782. This prolonged occupation drained British resources and manpower, undermining their efforts in other areas.

Savannah remained under British control for a considerable portion of the war. However, its eventual return to American hands demonstrated the unwavering determination of the revolutionary cause. Following the attainment of independence, Savannah experienced a period of prosperity. It played a vital role in the growth and development of the newly formed nation.

After the war, Savannah's favorable climate and fertile soil enabled the cultivation of cotton and rice. This agricultural success helped strengthen the economy of the newly established nation.

Savannah fell early to the British during the Southern Campaign. However, its role in the war and recovery efforts aided the fight for and establishment of American independence.
